Promoting Diversity and Inclusion
Akira Shimada, President and CEO, NTT

Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) is an important management strategy for the NTT Group, which is "NTT as a Creator of New Value and Accelerator of a Global Sustainable Society". In May 2023, we announced our medium-term management strategy, which positions D&I as the foundation of the corporate culture necessary for the creation of new value.
In recent years, customer needs have diversified, social issues have become more complex, and the pace of technological evolution has increased. This means each employee must enhance their expertise and challenge themselves to create and innovate while combining knowledge and values from different fields and cultures.
By allowing diverse members to openly share their opinions in the decision-making process, we can overcome the risks that homogeneous organizations run into.

I would like to explain the status of the D&I initiative in the NTT Group.
About promotion of advancement of women in the workplace, NTT Group currently has 10.1%1 of female managers and 45%2 of female executives, thanks to initiatives such as training for female employees at each level of the company and securing at least 30% of the female ratio in the program for the development of management personnel (NTT University). NTT's domestic major companies3 have set three targets for further promotion: the ratio of female executives (25 ~30% by FY25), the ratio of female managers (15% by FY25), and the ratio of female new section manager (30% since FY21).

As for the promotion of the activities of people with disabilities, NTT Group has approximately 4,000 people with disabilities working in various workplaces as a result of efforts to strengthen employment, including at four special-purpose subsidiaries. We will continue to create workplaces that accommodate the characteristics of disabilities and aim to continuously achieve the legally mandated employment ratio as the NTT Group.

For the LGBTQ community, we have implemented an internal system that treats same-sex partners the same as legally married couples and improves the workplace environment. In recognition of these efforts, the company has received the Gold award for eight consecutive years in the PRIDE Index 2023 (sponsored by work with Pride), which evaluates LGBTQ+ initiatives in the workplace.4

In addition, we are working to create an environment in which a diverse workforce can play an active role while listening to the needs within the company and changes in the global environment, such as those who work while raising children, caring for family members, or undergoing medical treatment. For example, by encouraging male employees to participate in childcare, 114.1%5 of male employees took childcare leave in FY23. In addition, approximately 900 employees have been transferred to work alone under the "Remote Standard," which allows employees to live in any place they like, and the promotion of diverse work styles through remote work and flexible work hours systems is helping many employees to expand their opportunities for success and realize well being.

NTT Group has approximately 190,000 employees in Japan and 140,000 employees overseas of various genders, ages, nationalities, and religions. To make diversity a driving force for growth, we need to respect, understand, and accept each other's differences, in other words — inclusion. NTT Group will continue to build an organization in which diverse human resources can play an active role with respect for human rights while contributing to the promotion of D&I in society.
