Music Live Showcase "CYBER TELEPORTATION TOKYO at SXSW" powered by NTT's immersive telepresence technology Kirari!® - Featuring 2017 Grammy Award nominated starRo in Austin and artists in Tokyo including Japanese dance duo AyaBambi -

On March 13, 2017 in Japan Factory (99 Trinity Street, Austin, TX) at SXSW 2017, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT; Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Hiroo Unoura, President and CEO) will present a remote interactive live performance between Tokyo and Austin (open at 10:00 pm, show starts at 10:30 pm), utilizing NTT's Immersive Telepresence Technology called "Kirari!®" and high-speed communications networking technologies.

"CYBER TELEPORTATION TOKYO at SXSW"

SXSW 2017

Japan Factory

Featuring 2017 Grammy Award nominated Japanese electronic music producer and DJ starRo in Austin and Japanese female dance duo AyaBambi, Rapper Ryofu (KYANDYTOWN), singer Taichi Mukai, and Cheeky Parade in Tokyo, NTT will show a live performance experience "CYBER TELEPORTATION TOKYO at SXSW" (see Fig. 1), in which the audience will experience an immersive synchronized performance of starRo in Austin and the artists "teleported" from Tokyo.

The live video images of the artists in Tokyo are extracted in real time and transported in various media formats synchronously over the network, then dynamically projected on multiple double-sided transparent screens which are spatially set up in the Austin live space (see Fig. 2) by utilizing NTT's Kirari!® technologies including "Real-Time Target Subtraction Technology under Various Background Situations" and "Advanced MPEG Media Transportation (MMT) Technology."

The network infrastructure used for this showcase was established using NTT's network testbed GEMnet2, in cooperation with Internet2 (a consortium of US universities providing an advanced networking environment), LEARN (Lonestar Education and Research Network) and the University of Texas System and Greater Austin Area Telecommunication Network.

These technologies will provide the audience in Austin a new immersive experience as if they are seeing the live stage of starRo interplaying with the artists in Tokyo who are teleported to Austin beyond time and space.

Appendix Detailed Specifications of the Kirari! Technologies

1)Real-Time Target Subtraction Technology under Various Background Situations

1) Real-Time Target Subtraction Technology under Various Background Situations

This enables target images subtraction from video sources recorded without using conventional chroma-key equipment, in real time.
In CYBER TELEPORTATION TOKYO at SXSW, at the venue of Tokyo the artist performance under the various illumination settings will be used as an input, and the images of the artists will be subtracted precisely and in real time. These subtract images will be transported to the venue of Austin and projected on the transparent double-sided screens with its actual size, which will reproduce the artists' performance at Tokyo.

2)Advanced MPEG Media Transportation (MMT) Technology

2) Advanced MPEG Media Transportation (MMT) Technology

Advanced MMT enables transportation of multiple media with different types, such as video image sources and sound sources through networks, without losing their exact time synchronization. Compared to the conventional technologies, Advanced MMT can significantly reduce the time delay including the processing time on media players at its destination, by reducing the processing time on encoder.
In CYBER TELEPORTATION TOKYO at SXSW, multiple video image sources of artists from various angles and sound sources will be transported to Austin through international high-speed network, then the images will be projected on multiple transparent screens with exact synchronization per frame, even on double sided. At the same time, the entire performance in Austin will be also sent back to Tokyo with low latency, which will achieve the real-time interactive remote live performance with long distances of Tokyo-Austin.
