Details and review of THE GREEN VISION 2020

The NTT Group promoted environmental activities from fiscal 2012 to 2016 based on the NTT Group's environmental vision "THE GREEN VISION 2020."

In 2016, as a five-year milestone since establishment, we looked back at the circumstances of "THE GREEN VISION 2020." Also, we reviewed our environmental activities alongside the worldwide trend with regard to the global environment and looking toward 2020 and the future, and established the "NTT Group Environmental Statement" and "Eco Strategy 2030."

This page introduces the contents of THE GREEN VISION 2020 and the review carried out in 2016.

"THE GREEN VISION 2020"

"THE GREEN VISION 2020" adopted "Creating a low carbon society", "Implementing closed loop recycling," and "Conserving biodiversity" in the global environment as the environmental themes to be addressed in the future. Based on these three themes, we have promoted three approaches: "Green of ICT," which targets reduction of environmental impact of our business activities, "Green by ICT," which entails utilizing ICT services to reduce environmental impact across society, and "Green with Team NTT," which means NTT Group employees and their families to contribute to various environmental protection activities together with communities.

THE GREENVISION 2020

Green of ICT

This approach is geared toward reducing the extent to which the NTT Group impacts the environment. One way this will be accomplished is by lowering the electricity consumption of ICT equipment, networks, data centers, and other ICT facilities in order to decrease CO2 emissions. At the same time, we will reduce resource consumption by reusing and recycling ICT equipment while also limiting the impacts of our communications facilities on ecosystems.

Green by ICT

This approach targets the reduction of the environmental footprint of society as a whole from a broad perspective encompassing a wide range of fields. Specifically, efforts include utilizing ICT to decrease the need to move people and goods, lower consumption of resources, improve the efficiency of energy usage and supply chains, and make environmental impacts more traceable.

Green with Team NTT

This approach entails utilizing the manpower of Team NTT, which consists of NTT Group members that support our CSR ideals, to participate in and contribute to various environmental conservation initiatives together with communities. Team NTT happily invites all willing participants, including regular employees, contract employees, temporary employees, and everyone else who works at the NTT Group as well as their families, retired employees, and business partners.

Review of THE GREEN VISION 2020

In THE GREEN VISION 2020, we upheld seven numerical targets and two action goals for 2020 (fiscal 2021). Having now reached the halfway point since setting these goals in fiscal 2011, we have reviewed the status of THE GREEN VISION 2020 from fiscal 2012 to 2016.

Creating a Low Carbon Society

In our Green OF ICT actions for reducing the NTT Group's environmental impact, we have set two targets for reducing the NTT Group's CO2 emissions by 2 million tons compared to the projected CO2 emissions (the volume estimated on a BaU basis), and by 15% compared to the level in fiscal 2009.

Approximately 95% of the NTT Group's CO2 emissions are generated by electricity used in the process of providing communications services. In fiscal 2016, we achieved a reduction of 940 million kWh in electricity usage from projected levels as a result of our Group-wide Total Power Revolution (TPR) campaign for promoting energy conservation. In cumulative terms, we have reduced CO2 emissions by 2,590 thousand tons from fiscal 2010 to 2016.

On the other hand, the volume of CO2 emissions from generation of purchased electricity has considerably increased compared to the reduction plan shown in fiscal 2011, and as of fiscal 2016 the electricity emission factor (CO2 emissions per 1 kWh of electricity generation) has risen by about 20% from the benchmark fiscal year of 2009. Consequently, CO2 emissions from the NTT Group's use of energy increased by 21% in fiscal 2016, even after accounting for the reduction effects of our energy conservation efforts.

In our Green BY ICT actions for reducing the environmental impact of society, we have set two targets, while also providing ICT services, for reducing CO2 emissions across society by 20,000 thousand tons, and five times more than the CO2 emissions of the NTT Group.

The dissemination of smartphones and realization of high-speed, large-capacity networks have led to a proliferation of new services such as video streaming, expanding opportunities for use by customers. Expanded use of ICT has also resulted in a reduction of CO2 emissions across society as we provided ICT services each year. As a result, this reduction associated with the provision of ICT services in fiscal 2016 reached 60,320 thousand tons, signifying more than 12 times the CO2 emissions of the NTT Group and exceeding our target by a large margin.

The use of ICT has continued to expand toward the creation of a safe, secure and prosperous society. The significance of being connected at all times and in all places during a disaster or other emergencies has gained renewed recognition, and ICT has been playing an increasingly important role. This in turn creates the need to expand facilities to provide safe, secure communications services.

Meanwhile, there was little possibility that the electricity emission factors will be reduced significantly over the years leading up to 2020. Considering the energy consumption required by telecommunications facility expansion, there was currently no guarantee that the NTT Group's target for CO2 emissions will be attained.

In view of these circumstances, the NTT Group decided to redouble its efforts to promote measures for addressing electricity use by raising the efficiency of facilities and conserving energy while also striving to expand our facilities to provide safe and secure ICT services. Also, we decided to expand our contribution to reducing CO2 emissions across society through our services, by enhancing services along with the expansion of our facilities.

Implementing Closed Loop Recycling

With regard to waste reduction, we have worked toward achieving a final disposal rate of 2% or less for all waste and zero emissions (1% or less) for decommissioned telecommunications equipment.

As for decommissioned telecommunications equipment, we have achieved zero emissions (1% or less) for the 12 consecutive year from fiscal 2005 through 2016.

We have also sought to improve the recycling rate for waste other than decommissioned telecommunications equipment in collaboration with intermediate treatment contractors. As a result of promoting these 3R initiatives, we were able to exceed our target and achieve a final disposal rate of 0.82% for all waste in fiscal 2016.

In our efforts to reduce paper consumption, we were targeting a reduction of 30% or more compared to levels in fiscal 2009. We were able to reduce our paper consumption in fiscal 2016 by 46% compared to fiscal 2009 through such efforts as closed loop recycling of telephone directories and Internet billing services (electronic invoice).

  • Paper Consumption Paper Consumption

Conserving Biodiversity

The NTT Group promoted initiatives for conserving biodiversity using two approaches.

One approach is implementation based on our business activities; we have endeavored to install our equipment and cables in ways that minimize impact on ecosystems. We also carried out initiatives such as designing office buildings with due consideration for biodiversity and protecting coral reefs in conjunction with our business activities.

The other approach is implementation based on social contribution through using ICT to disseminate information or support the sharing of information on the conservation of biodiversity. NTT Group employees throughout the country were also involved in tree planting, "Satoyama"* conservation and many other biodiversity-related initiatives.

*"Satoyama": Traditional agricultural landscapes of Japan that are mosaics of arable land, woodlands and other types of land that have been exploited sustainably for centuries and support rich biodiversity
