Approach to ICT Device Development and Procurement with consideration for energy-efficient performance

More than 90% of CO2 emissions associated with NTT Group business activities are attributed to the use of electricity for powering the company's offices and equipment. In order to effectively roll back its CO2 emissions, it is imperative for the NTT Group to develop and procure equipment for group power systems that deliver high energy-efficient performance/function.

The NTT Group Green Procurement Standards provide basic policies and define*1 performance targets for various categories of ICT equipment such as routers, servers, and so on, to be developed or procured for internal use by NTT.

Under the Standards, the NTT Group will exercise consideration for energy-efficient performance/function in addition to function, performance and cost in developing and procuring ICT equipment for internal use by NTT.

The Standards refer to the Ecology Guideline for the ICT Industry set forth by the ICT Ecology Guideline Council.

Overview

(1) Basic approach to develop and procure ICT equipment

On the basis of the normative reference of the ICT Ecology Guidelines for the ICT Industry., the NTT Group will develop and procure ICT equipment with as high a rank (number of stars) as possible. In addition to the focus on the energy-efficient performance of the equipment itself, the NTT Group also develops and procures equipment with functions that lead to the energy saving management at the communication equipment rooms and the data centers as a whole. In developing and procuring ICT equipment, a comprehensive assessment will be made with consideration to environmental added value and operational costs including air conditioning and electric supply, in addition to function, performance, and the cost of the product.

(2) Group targets for each type of equipment

Energy efficiency targets are specified for each type of ICT equipment, to be employed group-wide by the NTT Group companies in developing or procuring ICT devices. Target values for each type of equipment are the normative references specified in the ICT Ecology Guideline for the ICT Industry. Note that older types of equipment dating from before the "approximate date for achieving normative references" are not restricted by these target values.

(3) Functional requirements related to energy efficiency

Functions with which equipment has to be equipped to lead to energy saving management at the communication equipment rooms and the data centers as a whole are defined in ITU-T L.1300 Annex D, Appendix IV (Interface for energy management), as well as ITU-T L.1300 Annex C, Appendix V (Airflow direction for improved cooling efficiency).
