The NTT Group is working to reduce CO2 emissions associated with our business operations.

Does the NTT Group generate CO2?

The NTT Group consumes a great deal of electricity in the course of our ongoing business operations.

In FY2016 we used 8.74 billion kWh of electricity for offices and communication equipment.

That's equivalent to one-quarter of all the electricity used in Tokyo, or 1% of total power generation capacity in Japan.

Over 95% of the CO2 emissions of the NTT Group are from the electricity usage.

So by reducing our electricity consumption needs, we immediately reduce our CO2 emissions.

Electricity usage by the NTT Group in FY2016 was 8,740 million kWh, equivalent to one-quarter of total electricity usage in the Tokyo area. Over 95% of CO2 emissions in the NTT Group in FY2015 are associated with electricity usage.

How much electricity does data transmission use?

The volume of data transmitted per unit of electricity is called Telecom Power Efficiency.

The more data that can be transmitted for a given quantity of electricity, the higher the Telecom Power Efficiency rating.

We can improve Telecom Power Efficiency by designing devices that consume less power as well as more power-efficient network devices and data center equipment.

Our target is a ten-fold improvement in Telecom Power Efficiency by FY2031 relative to FY2014 levels.

This is the telecommunications industry equivalent of modifying a car so that it can travel 100 km per liter of fuel, when currently it only manages 10 km.

How are we working towards the targets?

In order to reduce electricity usage, the entire NTT Group is working to improve energy efficiency across a wide range of communication devices in accordance with the NTT Energy Efficiency Guidelines, which set out basic energy efficiency principles and numerical targets for product development and deployment.

The Guidelines are based on the criteria released by the ICT Ecology Guidelines Council*, an industry group dedicated to tackling climate change by promoting energy-efficient product development and deployment at all levels, with membership of various digital and communications devices suppliers including the NTT Group.

The Eco ICT logo, administered by the ICT Ecology Guidelines Council, is granted to telecommunications carriers that demonstrate a genuine commitment to reducing CO2 emission levels and/or equivalent environmental efforts.

*The ICT Ecology Guidelines Council is an initiative of five telecommunications industry groups concerned about global warming: the Telecommunications Carriers Association (TCA), the Telecommunications Services Association (Telesa), the Japan Internet Providers Association (JAIPA), the Communications and Information Network Association of Japan (CIAJ) and the ASP-SaaS-IoT Cloud Consortium (ASPIC).
