NTT Corporation

Business Strategy in the Field of Space Business

Tokyo - June 3, 2024 - In light of the environment surrounding the space business, NTT Corporation (Headquarters: Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo; Representative Member of the Board and President: Akira Shimada; hereinafter "NTT") will set focus areas and accelerate business development toward the realization of its previously announced vision, the space integrated computing network1. In addition, by launching NTT C89, a new brand in the field of space business, we will contribute to the expansion of the NTT Group's space-related businesses and the development of the entire space industry.

1. Environment surrounding the space business

Given that recent advances in space technology have reduced costs for space launches, and interest in outer space as well as the moon has been paid more and more attention, the number of companies entering the space business that utilize outer space for their services has been increasing and outer space has been more and more accessible. The Japanese government's announcement of the "Basic Plan for Space Policy", "Space Security Initiative", and establishment of the "Space Strategy Fund" have also led the environment surrounding the space business to an inflection point. Considering this background, we will establish focus areas in the space business field to accelerate business and technology development, and create integrated connections between related businesses of NTT Group companies and others to provide solutions that meet their customer needs. This will promote further expansion and development in the field of space business and contribute to the development of the entire space industry.

2. Focus areas in the space business

In the space integrated computing network concept, we have strategically defined the two focus areas: the one in which we aim to capitalize on our own technological strengths, and the other in which we will accelerate the commercialization of services in collaboration with partners while developing new technologies. In each area, we will carry out both business and technology development that will drive and expand the space business market.

  1. The area where we aim to capitalize on our own technological strengths
    ・ Domain utilizing GEO satellites
・ Domain utilizing observation LEO satellite and observation data PF
・ Domain utilizing High Altitude Platform Station (HAPS)
  2. The area where we aim to accelerate commercialization through partner collaboration while developing new technologies
・ Domain utilizing LEO satellite communications

3. Establishment of a new brand in the space business

NTT Group companies will launch a new brand, "NTT C89", with the aim of strengthening their business in the field of space, creating synergies, and developing new markets in the field of space by creating integral connections for their services and businesses in the field of space and proposing solutions that meet their customer's needs.
