NTT's Vision of a Sustainable Society: ~Self as We~
For a sustainable society, we need to consider current and future issues that will challenge us. These challenges include global and local social problems, environmental obligations, future epidemics and natural disasters, equitable economic prosperity, human rights issues, and technology's power for good or harm.
People can interpret an event or reality very differently depending on their perspective. The constant and increasing flow of information in today's world, combined with many diverse values and beliefs, can result in multiple points of view based on the same facts.
Because of this, many ideas, perceptions, and values that seem contradictory exist simultaneously. However, to create a more harmonious society, these ideas need to coexist in a paraconsistent manner. In other words, accepting that contradictory views can be true and are accommodated in a nondiscriminatory way. This approach will lead to a clearer recognition and a greater understanding of potentially conflicting ideas and values. Only in this way can we together take the right actions to help create a better society with more acceptance, prosperity and a long-term sustainable future for all.
The idea of "Self as We" is our way of expressing that the individual "Self" is part of the whole "We.""Self as We" is a way of thinking that regards complex systems involving teams or other groups who take actions together, as well as tools, environments, and more ("We") as a self. As "Me" within the "Self," we realize that the "We" have entrusted part of the action they take to us, and that the same applies for other people and objects.
Self as We is a way of explaining a method of seeing oneself not in the traditional sense of being an independent individual, but rather as part of a "We" who thinks about the happiness of others as well as oneself while still being an autonomous "Self."For example, an individual who feels the success or failure of a team to be a personal matter can be said to have a sense of Self as We.
Three themes based on the concept of "Self as We" have been established for the NTT Group's sustainability efforts: ensuring the positive coexistence of nature and humanity, improving prosperity for all people and cultures, and maximizing well-being for all.
Furthermore, we have established nine challenges and 18 activities for these three themes. We will contribute to the creation of a sustainable society by proactively promoting these measures.
