- Inclusive esports—where people with and without disabilities compete together—raise important questions about fairness, especially when skill assistance is provided to support players with upper limb disabilities. This paper investigates how both the provision and disclosure of such assistance influence perceptions of fairness from the perspectives of players and spectators. We conducted two complementary studies. In study 1, nine participants with and without upper-limb disabilities competed in first-person shooter matches under varying conditions of assistance availability and disclosure. In Study 2, 29 spectators with and without disabilities watched gameplay recordings of Study 1 and evaluated aspects like fairness and enjoyment. Results from Study 1 demonstrated that skill assistance enhanced game balance and player enjoyment, irrespective of disclosure. Conversely, while disclosure had minimal impact on gameplay outcomes, most participants emphasized the importance of disclosure to minimize potential discomfort. In Study 2, spectators generally responded more positively to matches involving assistance in terms of both enjoyment and fairness. However, fairness evaluations were affected more strongly by the presence and disclosure of assistance depending on the disability status of the spectators. These findings highlight the need for inclusive esports design that considers both support mechanisms and transparent communication, not only for players but also for diverse spectators.
