Deployment of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Base Stations Using Green Hydrogen

NTT DOCOMO is promoting the use of fuel cells as long-term backup power sources for communication infrastructure, having previously introduced ethanol fuel cells at base stations.
Starting in 2024, with carbon neutrality and further resilience enhancement as prerequisites, the company began evaluating the introduction of hydrogen fuel cells. Aiming for implementation at commercial base stations, the company is progressing with technical aspects as well as confirming regulatory and legal frameworks and coordinating with relevant ministries and agencies. Construction is expected to be completed in October 2025, with trial operations commencing in November. This initiative represents the first such challenge by a domestic telecommunications operator and is an advanced effort contributing to securing communications during disasters and realizing a decarbonized society.
